Genre Research

Our short film genre is a psychological drama and in preparation for creating and then filming our film, we are researching other short films with the same genre. Our film in a way is also linked to a romantic drama.

The first film we are looking at and researching is 2004 film 'Crash'. It was directed by Paul Haggis and distributed by LionsGate films. There is one scene from the film Crash with a Mexican man and a Persian man. The Mexican guy went to the Persian's store to fix the lock on his door. The lock was fixed but the problem was with the door. the Mexican guy told the Persian man but as his English isn't very good he didn't understand and kept telling the Mexican guy to fix the lock. After arguing the Mexican guy leaves and the Persian mans store gets broken into and smashed up. The Persian man then goes for revenge on the Mexican man and tries to shoot him. Unfortunately the Mexicans Daughter jumps up at her Dad as the Persian man shoots so he shoots her instead. Miraculously the girl is ok without a scratch on her which then makes the Persian man believe she is her guardian angel which has the same kind of effect as our film as Claire can't move on from the death of Ciaran and sees him as her guardian angel. The film also then goes into slow-motion which we want to replicate to show the emotion between the two people. We can to take inspiration from this film in our short film because it does well to really highlight the emotion between the two characters

The next film we looked at is 1997 film 'Titanic' This is similar to our film because it has two main characters, the same as ours. They are also in love, which again is similar to our film. Towards the end of the film, the main male character in the film (portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio) dies after the cruise ship Titanic sinks. Rose (the female character played by Kate Winslet) is Jack's lover and witnesses him die in this scene. The Director James Cameron wants to capture the emotion and disaster in this scene, we want to take inspiration from this film as well as Cameron uses several different ways to show emotion in this film. Quite like the first film we looked at, the two films with the same genre have a big impact scene on the film right at the end, In Titanic it has someone dying after the ship crashes. This is also similar to ours as the male character in our short film also dies although, you can't see the Ciaran die in our film it has a similar effect on Claire as she is Heartbroken from the death of Ciaran in our short film.
