To advertise our short film, we are going to create an A3 sized poster as a source of advertisement and giving the viewers an idea into what the short films about. Although, the posters we will be looking at are full length film posters and ours is only a short one so we will need to take inspiration from these but not try to make them too similar as ours is much shorter.

The first film poster we looked at is 2010 film Inception. We like this poster as it is interesting to look at, features the main character in the film (which is played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and also shows his name. The poster also gives an idea in to the background of the film, for example where it is set. This is showing it is in a big city with big skyscrapers but not showing which one exactly, also as he is stood in water in the middle of this city, it makes it intriguing and tempts you to go to the cinema and watch it. Finally, another little, although effective aspect of this film poster that we like is the caption for the film which states 'Your mind is the scene of the crime.' Again, this gives a little idea into the plot of the film although not giving it away too much so the audience wants to go watch it.
Although the colours in this posters aren't particularly bright or eye-catching in them terms, what it gives you is that the colours that have been used work well together which gives it a sharp appearance. The composition of the films means that there is one person in a long shot of him. This means that the director is obviously going to make the main character in the film very important and make him stand out in the poster, if they have too many bright colours to try to make the film overly eye-catching, it will ruin the whole outlook of the film and take attention away from the main character. The character is also related to the film as he is the person that the plot revolves around.
The Text and font in this poster also matches it really well and doesn't try to over-do the effects it has. It is also sharp and bold which fits in well with where it is located just under the long shot of the person. Also as the man is stood up, it is natural to look down at his feet to see where he is standing, as you do you will see he is stood on water in the middle of a big city. Then you naturally stop the name of the film.

The second one we have been looking at is 1994 Film 'The Shawshank Redemption'. This is very similar to the Inception as it has one man stood at a long shot. As it the first poster we looked at, the man in the poster is the main character in the film and everything really revolves around him as the plot goes on. The composition of the film is also similar to the first one as the man has his back to us if as we were looking at the poster and the titles is at the bottom. The font is also bold and sharp in terms of fitting in with the rest of the poster because it is a white font. It also has a caption at the top which catches your eye and relates to the film giving you into the plot of the film. It may also have been a quote from the film itself.
The text on the film features the title of the film in the biggest font on the poster, making it eye-catching and memorable, then the caption which is used to make it memorable and then the names of the main actors. I feel this is a key aspect of any big hollywood film as the names of actors are normally well known and work well to attract people to go and spend money viewing the film.
The background of the film makes it to be more attractive and catches the eye of people. As it is quite a bright colour at the top and then gets darker when it goes further down the poster. As it is rain, it is also associated with the type of film that it is and brings out the main character more.
I have also looked at a smaller and less-known UK film poster in Shifty. Obviously as this is a smaller company and director which has released and produced this film, they won't have much money to create a poster. The film was distributed by Metrodome distribution and it cost around £100,000 to create so obviously it is a small independent film company that has produced it and it hasn't got the seemingly 'unlimited' funds that big hollywood films do have. The poster itself has the obvious nature

of a small film company, it is bright with an overall colour of yellow and black which makes the poster stand out, the name of the film is also a big bold font which really dominates the poster. This is because the film doesn't really have any big name characters or actors in it so it doesn't really focus around these but moreo
ver on the actual name of the film and making it eye-catching so it catches people in and makes them want to go and see it. Although it does have something in common with big hollywood films as it has the two main characters as one of the main aspects on the poster in two large images just underneath the title of the film, this shows that having the main characters on the posters is a key part of the poster whether the film is by a big company or a small UK independent one.
In conclusion, I have found from looking at these posters and analysing them, the main thing with making a poster whether it is a hollywood film or one from a small company, is to not go over the top with the poster but make it attractive and eye-catching enough to actually make people go and watch it and more or less 'force' them to go and watch it. You have to think that many people will be queuing up waiting to get tickets for another film or will be passing by the cinema, you need to make sure they spot the poster. The colours need to work together well and you have to think carefully about which particular colours will work together with the pictures and the location of the picture on the poster itself.
