Film Treatment - Unforgettable

Company Name - LKN productions

Film Title - Unforgettable

Film Duration - 5 Minutes

Film Genre - Psychological/Romantic Drama

Film Audience - 15+ Males and Females as a lot of people like watching short films which involve people of a similar age. Also, it has a depressing scene in which some people under the age of 15 may find upsetting. Hence the reason for why we are aiming for people over the age of 15 to watch our film.

Main Characters - Ciaran and Claire.

Other Characters - Tom (Claire's Brother),

Film Certificate - 15+

Basic Plot - The short film involves two main characters, one male and one female of a similar age. We will have a split scene which shows the man on the left screen and the female on the right. It shows them both on the phone, implying that they are talking to each other and planning to meet later that day. They then both begin to get ready and begin their journey to the meeting place following the same route as each other showing how similar they are. It also shows how they do things that are also similar, for example going to the vending machine and buying a drink, which shows them doing it at the same time on the split screen, even though they are not. They also see and talk to people on the way, which means we will need cameo roles to play these parts. We see the Female in the film buying some flowers, which the audience will presume that they are to the male when they meet together although when they do get to the eventual meeting place. It shows the female walking into the screen but the male doesn't. The female then places the flowers on the floor with a card saying 'Miss you Ciaran X' and the audience realises that he died earlier that month and the meet which is being shown by the male is actually a meeting between the couple a year earlier. Giving a massive twist in the ending of the story.

Suggested Elements - Split screen featuring the male in the film on the left screen and then the Female on the right. This will give a unique view in to the short film and will be a very interesting Camera idea which we will look forward to using if we do decide to work with this. We also could work with slow-motion in the final scene as it gives it more effect into how the female feels when it reveals that the man is actually dead.

Movie Analysis

The first idea that we researched was the one that we chose for our 5 minute short film. This video here is the same genre, which is a kind of 'love drama' film. The thing I like the most in this film is the way they communicate by using post-it notes. The female character has earphones in which gives off the feeling that she is only using post-it notes because she is listening to music. At the end of the film you discover that she is communicating via post-it notes because she is deaf. This is interesting because it is an unusual twist.

There are various different types of shots in our film. Some similar to the one I am analysing now. Here is an example of a medium long shot at an eye level angle. These are the shots that our film will mainly involve. There are also various close ups in the film as well as match on action shots.

The photo shown below is the title sequence which we would like to use in our film. I like this because it is very detailed and very well drawn out and reflects how good the actual 5 minute film is.

The sound on this film is both diegetic and non-diegetic. It's diegetic when the man is talking to the woman. And it's non-diegetic as there is music playing in the background which only the viewers can hear. There is music playing through all the way through which only the viewers can hear. The diegetic sounds are when the man is talking to the woman. He can hear is own voice which makes it diegetic. It is still diegetic even though the female character cannot hear him speaking as she is deaf.

The characters wear different items of clothing each time they meet so it gives it a more realistic feeling and it is not repetitive. The man always wears a shirt with the top button undone, which may reflect his personality of being a boring person with no change in his daily routine. The girl on the other hand wears different types of clothing each time they meet. On one day she'll have a skirt and cardigan on, the next some jeans and a top and then on another day she'll be wearing a dress. This could also reflect her personality of being a person that likes change, perhaps.

Evaluation of our Idea - Strengths and weaknesses

The strengths of our film are:

-Very good idea and storyline
-Would work quite well if we film and edit it correctly
-Original idea
-Option of unusual representation of narrative. (We could use split screen or cross-cutting.)
-Unusual twist at the end of the story. This makes it more interesting.
-Only two main characters.

The Weaknesses of our film are:

-Will be quite difficult to film and find good locations to film it.
-Will take a lot of time and effort editing.
-We will need other people who are not in our media group to film as our group contains only males. (we need a female as part of the plot.)
-Some of the scenes we are wanting to film, we haven't found suitable locations yet. (For example, we need one where one character can stand on higher ground than the other.)
-It may take a lot of time as the nature of our plot means we have to film certain scenes twice.

In conclusion, we feel that the idea we have decided to go with is a very good one although it will take a lot of work. But we are prepared to work hard and put enough effort in to make it understandable and to make it work. We feel that the weaknesses here are minor and we are confident that we can find a way to get round them.

Movie Analysis

We decided to use the 1st movie idea we came up with as our movie. This movie idea isn't the same style with the split screen as ours will be if we decide to go with this, but the movie is the same style as our idea. One of the things i like about this movie is the filter they have on the camera. The filter is a slight de-colourised and slight blue tint on it to make the movie have a cold eery feel. this is shown with the screen shot shown below.

There is also slow paced editing at the beginning of the film to show that the mood Is very relaxed and to set the mood as a nice happy mood but just before the mother and child disappears it lingers around to show their importance in the story. It then cuts back to show the sadness and the confusion on the mans face to show that something isn't right.

Another thing which is good on the editing is when the pace changes and goes to a really fast pace editing, this shows the panic and confusion in his life as he realises that his wife is no longer alive. The fast pace is also done with Jump Cuts this makes it more fast to show the panic better. This then builds up and up until he leaves the table cause the panic and reality that has hit him is too much.

At one point of the film there is a close up of the Wife and the Baby showing that they are his family and they are important to the story. This makes the audience realise that these two characters are important and need to be followed by the audience as their roles in the film are of high importance.

Theres also a tracking shot while the man is walking towards his home. This looks very good and done smooth. The shot shows him walking towards his home and slowly tracking towards him to show the happiness on his face as he sees his family waiting at the door for him as he has come home from work.

The sound has 3 songs played throughout the film that are non diagetic. 2 of them set the mood as quite an eery and creepy atmosphere. the other is a happy song played in major key as the man and the woman sit down for dinner to show that the man is very happy to be with his wife but as she disappears this music fades away. Then the sound changes to just the man breathing which makes the audience hear the man's pain.

The genre of the film is a Romantic Drama just like our movie. This is because of the love seen between the Man and the Woman, this shows that they are together and are a family. The twist at the end of the film makes it a drama. The twist is the the mans family died and that he cant cope with it so pretends that he is still with them.

The narrative of the story is the man in the film has lost his wife and child but can't accept the fact that they have both died so he lives his life pretending that they are ok. At the end of the film it sinks in that he is alone and has lost his wife and child this has great effect as there is a close up/extreme close up to show his pain and that he has to realise that he is alone.

There are 3 characters in the short film. There is the man who is the main character in the story. He is a guy who has lost his family, maybe to a tragic accident but you never actually find out how they died. He lives a lie by placing 2 plates at the dinner table and other things like even talking to them. It isn't until the end of the film he realises they're dead. The other characters are the woman and the baby. These characters are very important characters as they aren't actually there they are just a figment of the mans imagination to help him deal with the pain of losing them.

The titles in the movie are very bland, They have a black background with white writing on. Although they are bland they do fit nicely with the type of film as the film is very simple and un-complex this makes the titles fit very nicely with the film.

Film Research for Idea 3

This is similar to the idea for Short film idea 3, It shows a young man on a train while it is moving similar to the one in our idea. It also shows a flash forward into a park where he is with a woman laughing and taking pictures. We could use this as inspiration for our third film idea as it has flash forwards and then flashes back onto the original scene where he is on the train.

It also follows a similar plot as it involves generally the same amount of people as we would be using in this.

The picture to the left shows the scene which would have been very similar to ours, although ours would show the girl in the background at first and then would take her out later on. This scene is also similar with the camerawork.

Film Research for Idea 2

This is where we initially got the idea from for movie idea 2. This was also an A2 short film made by 'fuseflilms1' It is done in parallel action which is mostly what we will be doing in our short film. The plot of the film is very similar as well, with the character not getting to his place in one run-through and getting there on the other. Also similar to our film is what happens because of him getting to his destination. In this case it was the bus he was running for. As a result of him making it to the bus, he dies in a crash.

Film Research For Idea 1

This shows a video made by APSMovies on youtube. The movie style is very similar to the idea we have for our 1st movie idea. There is a very nice shot of the girl on the bridge and the boy walking down from the bridge, but as a twist you can see each person in the background.

This is a shot we will try to do in our movie as i like the way you can see the other person in the background and they are going to be meeting at the end of the movie. It is also done in parallel action, which is where the scenes are both done at the same time, which is what we will be doing in our movie. But after looking at this and noticing that this will be a very good thing to put into our film it wouldn't fit the two different time periods that are being shown as Ciaran is already dead.

Initial movie Idea 3

Our third initial movie idea is about a man who does exactly the same every single day. He goes to work the same hours every day, catches the same train every day, does the same thing every day and more-or-less sees the same people every day. One in particular is a beautiful woman of similar age who gets on the same train every day as him. He always wishes to talk to this woman but never builds up the courage to. The beginning to this basically shows how his life is and is accompanied with voice overs by the man about how he wishes his life was, and how he wishes he could talk to the women. As this idea of him wanting to talk to the woman develops, he is seen going home and doing nothing apart from watching TV and looking in the mirror imagining how his life could be if he was confident enough to take his chances. It also shows him getting increasingly annoyed at himself. It also shows a flash scene into what his life would be like if he was in a relationship with the girl, it shows him walking around a park holding hands and laughing with each other, but most of all this shows him happy. This continues over a few days, and he decides that the next day he will talk to the Woman, although she is not there and is not there for the rest of that week. The man realises that he has missed his chance at finally being happy and the final scene shows him walking through the same park (in the future scene where he is seen with the girl) looking for her. He sits down on a bench where he sees a note next to him which reads "Your chances are rare, take them."

Initial Movie Idea 2

This movie starts off with a man who wakes up late for where he needs to get to (interview, school, college, etc) He's rushing and forgets various things and on the way to where he needs to be he encounters unfortunate events that slow him down even more. He eventually gets there late and is told to go home. After he reaches his destination the shot is back at the beginning where it becomes a split screen. The left side shows the character walking home after he's late and the right side of the screen goes back to the beginning of the film. It shows him getting out of bed and it's re-run through, but this time he's a few minutes earlier and reaches his destination on time. When he is on his journey to his destination there is non-diegetic music playing. It is fortunate that he doesn't reach his destination as if he did then he would encounter terrible events on the way which would inevitably result in the character's death. When the character has reached his destination the music becomes diegetic as it's playing through earphones. It is a non-linear narrative as it cuts back to the beginning half way through the film when it split screens. When the character gets home he turns on the radio to find out that there had been a serious incident at the place he was due and that several people were killed or severely injured.

Initial Movie Idea 1

Our first initial movie idea is. The movie starts in split screen, one side a young lad on the phone in his bedroom, the other a girl in hers both on the phone. A conversation is done planning a meet, they then put down the phone and the lad goes to his CD player/Docking station and puts on some music which is then played as all you can hear, diegetic sound as the music can be heard by both characters. Both characters get changed and leave their homes, they then walk to the meeting place, along the way meeting people going to the shop and buy a drink for example. a shot of them both touching a rail at the same time to show how similar they are. the girl then enters a flower shop and picks up some flowers without the audience knowing why but they then assume its for the lad. After going on their travels for a while the girl gets to the meeting point before the lad, then as the guy turns up at the meeting place the camera is almost in the same spot and you can see the background carry on through to the other screen. The girl then stands facing the guy both smiling in close up, cuts back to long shot and the boy then steps forward towards the girl as if to move onto the other screen, but he doesn't make it onto the other screen and just disappears, the boys side of the screen then disappears from the screen and the girls extends out to where the boys screen was, and you see flowers gathered around something (lamppost, wall, etc) a close up of a note on the flowers the girl bought saying I love you and miss you forever Ciaran, RIP. which you then realise that was the lad on the opposite screen, and he was shown a year earlier meeting her. she then places the flowers down with the rest with a close up of her face showing the sadness.
